2. Indications of source

 

The country of origin of the olives from which the oil was extracted must be indicated.

 

3. The bottler's alphanumeric approval code (only for virgin olive oils)

All companies involved in the standardization and packaging (bottling) of extra virgin olive oils, olive oils and seed oils must be approved by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food and provided with an alphanumeric identification number.

4. Best Before Date

Olive oil does not have an expiry date and its category changes over time. A date is usually set, which is usually up to 18 months. The harvest date is not decisive for this. It is necessary to indicate the month and year of best before.

The best-before date is the date by which the manufacturer/bottler guarantees that the product will retain its qualities and properties as long as the instructions for proper storage, both in the shop and at home, are followed.  The main difference to the expiry date is that the product can be consumed without hesitation even after the best-before date has passed, without any health risk, even if its quality may no longer be the same.

The LOT number does not have to be specified if the best before date contains a clear indication of day, month and year. In any case, however, the traceability of the products should be guaranteed.
